![]() ![]() ![]() You get to Alcatraz by being the worst of the worst. I never knew prisons could be picky, but I guess they can. The convicts we have are the kind other prisons don't want. And then there are a ton of murderers, rapists, hit men, con men, stickup men, embezzlers, connivers, burglars, kidnappers and maybe even an innocent man or two, though I doubt it. There are twenty-three other kids who live on the island because their dads work as guards or cooks or doctors or electricians for the prison, like my dad does. Today I moved to Alcatraz, a twelve-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water. Al Capone Does My Shirts has become an instant classic for all kids to read! The Newbery Honor Book and New York Times Bestseller that is historical fiction with a hint of mystery about living at Alcatraz not as a prisoner, but as a kid meeting some of the most famous criminals in our history. ![]()

![]() Another-a very funny story about an editor caught up with gangsters-is set in London in the 2000s. ![]() One involves a young American doctor on a sailing ship in the South Pacific in the mid-1800s. Written by the British author David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas is made up of six inter-related stories set in different times and places. Yet if you haven’t already read it (it came out in 2004) or seen the movie with Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, I suspect that my summary of the plot will make it sound quite strange. It explores how self-centered and bad people can be, but also how supportive and good people can be. I can tell you that it is a touching and clever novel about moral choices. Cloud Atlas is a wonderful book that is hard to describe. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Elsewhere in the collection, the author explores her own identity as a black, Southern, Christian feminist and the ways in which personal politics can become incongruous, and she openly admits her own privilege. In the essay “The Smartest Man I Never Knew,” Cooper uses the story of the attempted murder of Cooper’s mother (while she was pregnant with Cooper) by her mother’s jealous boyfriend as an example of American culture’s toxic masculinity. Many of the essays are deeply personal, with Cooper using her own experiences as springboards to larger concerns. ![]() Cooper, Cosmopolitan contributor and cofounder of the Crunk Feminist Collective blog, provides incisive commentary in this collection of essays about the issues facing black feminists in what she sees as an increasingly retrograde society. ![]() ![]() If the being was incapable of doing anything else, then it follows that the being was not truly “free,” and thus had no choice but to disrespect God.īecause humans have free will, they are constantly vacillating between good and evil, or between God and Satan. While free will is a notoriously difficult concept to define (even Lewis doesn’t try to do so in The Screwtape Letters), one useful “test” of free will was proposed by the important Christian thinker Saint Augustine: if a being commits a wrongful act, the act can only be considered a “sin” if the being, placed under identical circumstances, could have behaved any other way. In Christian theology, humans are unique insofar as they have free will. Humanity’s imperfection, Screwtape maintains, is a consequence of its freedom. ![]() God has created humans to be deeply flawed-they have imperfect knowledge of the world and of themselves, they are foolish and irrational, and they often disrespect God. ![]() ![]() Early on in The Screwtape Letters, Screwtape explains the challenges that human beings face in their lives. ![]() ![]() They then interview Faber's fellow tenants from 1940. The earliest written source to present King Arthur as a historical figure is the Historia Brittonum, a history of the Welsh assembled from a variety of sources possibly by Nennius, a Welsh monk and scribe who lived in the first half of the ninth century or by Merfyn Frych, King of Gwynedd (reigned 825-844). Stereotypes about women in the workplace are strong. This is why, if a job involves having power and lots of responsibility (which is typical of leadership positions), it will probably be taken by a man. And women are usually discouraged from demonstrating these features. The reason is that career progress requires taking risks and the ability to stand up for oneself. However, the number of women in top jobs haven’t increased. In Europe, 82% of women completed upper secondary education, compared to 77% of men. In the United States, girls earn 60% of master’s degrees and 57% of undergraduate ones. Just like men, women have the skills to be leaders. Here’s our chapter-by-chapter summary of “Lean in.” Exposing vulnerable moments, she hopes that her example will empower women to lean in and achieve their full potential. Only 4% of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women. Of the 195 countries, only 17 are led by women. The glass ceiling has cracked in many industries. One hundred years ago the suffragettes marched in the streets, fighting for women’s rights and equality. ![]() |
